On Good Friday during Easter week in Quezalteqeque, as in most towns, people create beautiful rugs "alfombras" out of colored sawdust and lumber frames. That same evening, after everyone has praised their neighbors creations, a somber procession leaves the church and tramples all the rugs underfoot. The rugs are beautiful and colorful both before and after they are trampled. Photo by Monica Fitzgerald. |
