In the back yard of the home of my family was this WWII Japanese Zero fighter plane. It remains resting where it crashed over 50 years ago. On close inspection you can see holes where bullets pierced its thin aluminum skin and you can even sit in the cockpit, as the seat remains bolted to the frame. The tires are also intact, and if you look closely at the engine block, you can make out Japanese writing. WWII remnants like this can be found throughout Micronesia. Photo by Pete Lowy. |
