This is the house of my Peace Corps training family, which is typical of many I-Kiribati homes. The hut on the right is for cooking. In the back is the raised sleeping hut. On the left is the boia, or living room/dining room/place to hang-out . In the center of the compound was the wash stand and the grave of the family patriarch. I knew I was accepted by the family when they gave me a chore to perform. Every day I would wash out the coconut containers, used to collect fresh coconut sap, and pour it on the grave 'to give Tetabo his daily drink'. Photo by Meg Kinghorn |
